🇸🇪 Improv in Sweden

Sweden has been improvising for a long time, and seriously. Stockholms Improvisationsteater, founded in 1989 by Martin Geijer, has had its own stage on Sigtunagatan since 1992 and plays nothing but improvised work — never a script. Geijer went on to found Improstudion, over at Skanstull, which trains actors and executives alike. Between them, these two houses shaped a good part of the Swedish improvisers playing today. The scene does not only speak Swedish, and that is what makes it reachable. Presens Impro works in American long form. International Theater Stockholm performs, teaches and runs its workshops in English — the door to take if you land without the language. In Gothenburg, Impram brings together improvisers from more than twelve nationalities and plays in English, while the Göteborg Improv Comedy Club takes over Contrast on Tredje Långgatan every other Wednesday. In Malmö, MIIP has met twice a week for more than nine years, in English — and Copenhagen is thirty-five minutes away by train, which makes that one address a way into two countries. If you want to come and play as a visitor, the road goes through Uppsala: Teater Prego produces SWIMP, Sweden's international improv festival. Gothenburg has its own, Improfest, run by Gbgimpro.
